God... is merciful and doesn't
want to punish us.
That's because he is a "God of
love." (1 John 4:8) He loves each one of us as though there
was only one of us. However, the same Bible that tells us that God
is a God of love also tells us...
God is a God of justice and must
punish sin.
God says,
"I will by no means clear
the guilty."
Exodus 34:7

We have a problem. God
loves us, and doesn't want to punish us, but he is a God of justice and
must punish sin. He solved that problem for us in the person of Jesus
Christ.
Who is Jesus?
The Bible tells us that he is
both God and man. (John 1:1,
14) God came down to earth in the form of a man and lived a completely
sinless life. We sinned against an eternal
God and therefore must pay an eternal
price. We are finite and
human and can not pay the price... unless we have an eternity
to pay it. So the eternal
God came down in the form of a man and paid the price in a finite
moment of time. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for
our sins and rose from the grave to purchase a place for us in heaven.
"All
we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own
way, and the Lord has laid on Him (Jesus) the sin of us all."
Isaiah 53:6
Jesus paid for our sin.
Now he offers you eternal life, heaven, as a free gift. This gift
is received by faith.
